Around Wirksworth

There are numerous outdoor attractions near Wirksworth, with the Peak District National Park only one mile away. The open countryside of the Peak District has numerous walks and breathtaking views, as well as areas of historic interest. Traditional stone built farms with drystone walls add to the splendour. Carsington Water is only 5 miles away and provides opportunities for sailing, canoeing and bird watching. The High Peak Trail provides excellent off road cycling and walking. There is bike hire at nearby Middleton Top on the trail(01629 823 204). For the more adventurous there is rock climbing and bouldering (www.acclimbatize.co.uk).

Nearby towns include Matlock Bath (2 miles), Matlock (5 miles), Ashbourne, (8 miles) and Bakewell. Chatsworth House is a 15 minute drive away, with its lovely grounds.

There is Gullivers Kingdom and The Heights of Abraham at Matlock Bath, which provide fun for all the family. The cable car ride offers an excellent view over the Derwent Valley before exploring the underground caverns where the lead miners worked. Cromford Mill, the first water powered cotton spinning mill, built by Richard Arkwright and the start of the canal are at nearby Cromford (2 miles away). The Crich Tramway village is home to the nation's collection of vintage trams.
